How to use Expansion to help children with speech delays

Are you worried of your child‘s speech delay? Is your child stuck at using only single words?

As parents, we all want our children to communicate more effectively and have quality of life.

Parents are the best teachers of language. They have the most opportunities to impact a child’s language development! :)

A very useful strategy is expansion. Parents, teachers and clinicians can use this strategy anywhere. Incorporate this to your at-home speech therapy.

Expansion:

If your child is learning to speak, you can encourage him/ her to speak more and acquire more vocabulary.

Aim:

To acknowledge what your child says, model vocabulary and structure so he/ she can use in the future.

How it works:

  • Repeat what child said by adding 1-2 extra words, details, or a in a more complete structure – like a short sentence or phrase. Don’t expect your child to repeat you. Just focus on aknolwdeging and modelling. Over time, your child will learn these new words and how to use them based on your modelling.

Watch the video on how it is done.

Where Can I Practice Expansion and Extension With My Child?

Sprinkle it in daily: There are many opportunities to use language throughout the day.

Example, during play with your child, when reading a book, while riding in the car, at the dinner table, when showering your child and helping her get dressed.

Try this at home!
